Overview

The many historic buildings, museums and monuments make this a historical ‘heimat’ of South Africa. It is also called the “Garden City” due to the abundance of Jacaranda trees flowering into a sea of purple. It is the capital city and steeped in the history of South Africa.

Ditsong National Museum of Natural History is the only natural history museum in Gauteng and one of the largest in South Africa. It is unique in that it is the only institute in South Africa that offers the local, national and international community the opportunity to view its collections including original fossil material usually denied the public.
British troops invaded Pretoria and requisitioned Melrose House to use as their war offices. For 18 months, the war effort against the Boers was strategised from 275 Jacob Mare Street. The Peace Treaty of Vereeniging that ended the war was signed around the massive dining table at Melrose House on 31 May 1902.

You start this tour at the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History is the only natural history museum in Gauteng and one of the largest in South Africa. It is unique in that it is the only institute in South Africa that offers the local, national and international community the opportunity to view its collections including original fossil material usually denied the public.
From here we go to Church Square, originally Market Square, the square at the historic centre of the city of Pretoria, South Africa. The founder of Pretoria, Marthinus Pretorius, determined that the square be used as a market place and church yard. Church Square is one of the must-see places to visit in Gauteng. The square is surrounded by historical buildings in varying neo-classical architectural styles, including the impressive Palace of Justice where former president Nelson Mandela and several of his comrades were tried and charged for treason during the infamous Rivonia Trial, the Old Capitol Theatre and the Ou Raadsaal (Old Government) building. Other notable buildings include the Old Nederlandsche Bank building, home to the offices to Tshwane Tourism and the General Post Office, which was erected in 1910. One of the best places to sit and survey the square is from the terrace of the art nouveau styled bistro Café Riche on the corner, the oldest café in Pretoria and an invariable point of interest on the Gauteng map.

Now to Melrose House played an important role during the Anglo-Boer Wars. In June 1900 British troops invaded Pretoria and requisitioned Melrose House to use as their war offices. For 18 months, the war effort against the Boers was strategised from 275 Jacob Mare Street. The Peace Treaty of Vereeniging that ended the war was signed around the massive dining table at Melrose House on 31 May 1902.
